Roost Café Bar, Brewery Room, MCR and JCR accessibility
The Roost Café Bar, Brewery Room, MCR and JCR are in the southwest of the site, with step free access from West Court or from the Orchard. There is a lift to access the rooms on the first floor and a separate lift to access the basement.

Entrance access
Approaching from the Orchard, there are two doors, one either side of the Roost Café Bar. The MCR and JCR are closer to the door on the west side (the door on the right as you are facing the Roost). The Roost Café Bar, Brewery Room and Webb Library can be accessed from either side, however the step free access and lift are via the west (righthand) door. Step free access is also possible via the West Court courtyard. Inside the rooms
The Brewery Room is in the basement, the JCR and Roost Café Bar are on the ground floor and the MCR is on the first floor.
The corridors and walkways feature manually operated doors and some areas with a width of less than 120cm. The flooring comprises tiles and wood, with some sections having a shiny finish that might cause glare or appear slippery to some individuals. The lighting levels are varied.
Background music is played in some areas. There is no hearing assistance system.
As well as the lift and stairs to the first floor, detailed on the Webb Library accessibility page, there is a separate set of stairs and a lift between the Roost Café Bar and the Brewery Room in the basement. The stairs are located within the Roost Café Bar internal seating area. There are over 15 steps between floors, with each step height between the recommended 15cm and 18cm, but the depth is not within the recommended 30cm and 45cm range. The steps are not clearly marked. Handrails are present on both sides of the steps, at the recommended height of 90cm to 100cm, covering the entire flight and are easy to grip, though they do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last steps. The lighting levels at the steps are low to moderate.
The lift is approximately 10m from the entrance from the Orchard. It is a platform lift with a weight limit of 500kg. A member of staff does not need to be notified for use of the lift. There is a clear level manoeuvring space of 150cm × 150cm in front of the lift. The external controls for the lift are within 90cm to 110cm from the floor. The colour contrast between the external lift controls and the control plate is fair, but the contrast between the control plate and the wall is poor. The clear door width is 89cm, and the dimensions of the lift are 96cm x 177cm. The lift has separate entry and exit doors. The lift does not have a visual floor indicator or an audible announcer. The internal controls are within 90cm to 120cm from the floor. The lift does not have a hearing loop system, Braille markings, but it does have tactile markings. The lighting levels in the lift are moderate to good.
There is a single push pad automatic door on the west side of the Roost Café Bar and a single manual door on the opposite side.
Tables cannot be booked in advance. There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered, and staff can bring food and/or drinks to tables. The height of the service counter is 112cm. There is a moveable card machine available for payment. Menu types include written wall menus, which are clearly written and presented in contrasting colours. Staff can read menus to customers upon request. Takeaway cups, adapted cups, and adapted cutlery are not available, but drinking straws are provided. Background music is played in this area. There is no hearing assistance system.
There is ample room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre. The majority of tables are accessible to wheelchair users, with surface heights ranging from 40cm to 105cm. No tables or chairs are permanently fixed, and some chairs have armrests on both sides. The seating options include coffee tables, high tables, sofas, and high stools. The lighting levels are varied, and the flooring in the seating area is a mix of carpet and brick. There is an outdoor seating area with tables at a height of 68cm.
The bar is below the Roost Café Bar and can be accessed via the stairs or lift. This area is usually used as additional seating for the Roost Café Bar during the day, with the bar not being in operation. There is a single manual door which might be difficult to open. Drinks can be bought at the bar which has a counter heigh of 118cm and has a moveable card machine. There are no menus for the bar. Staff can also bring drinks to the tables. Tables cannot be booked in advance. Takeaway cups, adapted cups and cutlery are not available but drinking straws provided.
There is ample room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre. The majority of tables are accessible to wheelchair users. The standard height for the underside of dining tables is 70cm, with the surface height of the lowest table being 35cm. All tables and some chairs are permanently fixed, but no chairs have armrests on both sides. Additional seating includes coffee tables and sofas. The type of flooring in this area is wood, with some sections that are shiny and could cause issues with glare or appear slippery. The lighting levels are moderate to good. Music may be played during functions and events. There is external access to the Brewery Room from the Orchard via steps.
The JCR is on the ground level. If coming from the Orchard through the entrance on the west side of the Roost Café, it is off the corridor to the right that leads to the Conference and Events office. The MCR is on the first floor, up the stairs or lift on the west side of the Roost Café Bar. The corridor outside the rooms is not sufficiently wide enough (150cm+) to allow wheelchair users to pass. However, there is step-free access into both rooms from the corridor, and both doors have an opening width of 75cm+. The door to the JCR is not push pad activated. The door to the MCR is push pad activated on exit only. There is a door in the MCR to a second room which is push pad operated on entry and automatic on exit.
The furniture is not fixed in either room. The clear floor space beneath tables in the room ranges between 35cm and 72cm. There are no chairs with armrests on both sides in the JCR, although a few are available in the MCR. The rooms do not have an unobstructed minimum turning space of 150cm x 150cm, but furniture can be moved to allow for wheelchair users to manoeuvre. Floor coverings in the rooms are even with no trip hazards.
There is a vending machine in the JCR with controls ranging between 105cm and 122cm in height. In the first MCR Room there is a pool table, fuzzball table and kitchen area with a counter height of 92cm. In the second MCR room there are several sofas, armchairs and other chairs and tables.
A hearing assistance system is available upon request from the Porters' Lodge. There is no visual fire alarm beacon in the room.

The closest accessible toilets can be found either on the ground floor, near the entrance on the west side of the Roost towards the JCR, on the first floor near to the lift and the MCR, or in the basement next to the Brewery Room.
